No. The idea that a heat pump install means ripping out every radiator in your home is one of the most overstated worries about switching. Some radiators in your property may already be suitable. The ones that aren’t can usually be swapped on a case-by-case basis, not all at once.
Why people think they need new radiators
A heat pump runs at lower flow temperatures than a gas boiler. Boilers typically push water through your radiators at 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. Heat pumps run cooler, more like 35 to 50 degrees. The same radiator at a lower flow temperature gives off less heat per minute, so the assumption is “I need bigger radiators everywhere”.
That logic is partly right, but only partly. It depends entirely on the radiator surface area you already have versus the heat demand of each room.
What actually decides this
The radiators in your home that need swapping are the ones that aren’t large enough to deliver enough heat at the lower flow temperature. The radiators that already have plenty of surface area for the room size will be fine.
In practical terms, this means many older Cotswold and Cheltenham properties (which often have generously sized radiators from when houses were less well insulated) need fewer swaps than you’d expect. Newer builds with smaller “designer-style” radiators often need more.
What our engineer says
“No, not necessarily. Some of the radiators in your property may already be suitable to take heat pump technology. However, this will be picked up on your survey, which you should always have prior to having the heat pump installed.”
