Solar thermal uses solar panels to capture the free heat energy that the sun provides and then uses it to heat up water which is stored in a hot water cylinder. A boiler or immersion heater can be used as a back-up to heat the water further to reach a required temperature. Solar thermal heating systems can achieve savings on your energy bills. Based on the results of a recent field trial, typical savings from a well-installed and properly used system are £60 per year when replacing gas heating and £70 per year when replacing electric immersion heating.

There are a number of government grants and schemes available for the domestic user designed to help fund the initial installation cost of solar thermal and provide on-going financial support. For more information on this please visit the Renewable Heating Incentive page on our website.
